  The Fort Beaufort Advocate and General Advertiser of 1881 21 January 1881 There is an exhibition in the window of the Dispatch office in East London a sample of coffee grown in the past season by Mr Samuel Dredge of this district. Those who have roasted and tried the coffee pronounce its flavour to be very good. Dr Dredge's crop consists of a hundred nags, all in good condition, and we hope it will find its way into the hands of one of our merchants who will take care that at least some portion comes under the notice of experienced home buyers. 16 September 1881 Mr Dredge, the well-known transport rider of Kaffraria, threw himself under a train in King Williamstown in a fit of temprary insanity and was instantly killed. It is said that the deceased was a wealthy man.
