• Notes

"As a schollboy, had pepper thrown in his eyes at school. As a result, he lost one eye – it was enucleated at the old Johannesburg General Hospital under local anaesthetic, and he walked home. Became a pharmacist. Had a motor-cycle accident, sustaining a sever compound fracture of his ankle which bled profusely. His life was saved, he claimed, by a woman who threw brown sugar on the wound, which congealed and stopped the hemorrhage. His ankle troubled him all his life, but didn't stop him playing golf all his life." [2]
