  At the age of 10 yrs he accompanied his father Thomas Goose to Grahamstown. His name is recorded on death notice (MHG: D970) of his son Francis Mathews as Frederick Mathews. On his own hand written will his name is recorded as Matthews Frederick - (6 August 1904). Baptism records also give Matthews Frederick and b. 26 Feb 1853.
