Settler Handbook Content:   No. 15 on the Colonial Department list, led by Nathanael Morgan of 19 Shoemakers Row, Blackfriars, London, an Assistant Surgeon of the 81st Regiment of Foot on half-pay. (Like all other half-pay officers who wished to emigrate, Morgan had to make formal application to the Commander in Chief, HRH the Prince Regent, for leave of absence to proceed to the Cape.)

This was a joint-stock party made up principally of London tradesmen and their families. Phillips lived in Whitechapel, James Thomas in Poplar, Kestell in Limehouse, Halse in Finsbury and his brother-in-law Poultney in Bishopsgate. (Joseph Jinks' young maidservant Martha Smith was a sister of Susan Halse and Ann Poultney.) Jinks and Floodgate were the only men of the party as it finally sailed whose names did not appear on Morgan's original list.

Deposits were paid for 12 men, but three of them - Robert Allen, Robert Gadson and Joel Tilke - appear to have withdrawn from the party before it sailed. The nine remaining families embarked at Deptford in the Ocean regular transport which sailed from Portsmouth on New Year's Day 1820. William, the infant son of Thomas Henry Halse, and Jane, the infant daughter of William Thomas, died at sea. The Ocean reached Table Bay on 29 March and Algoa Bay on 15 April. Morgan's party was located on the Blaauwkrantz River and its location was named Beauty Vale.
